The Lakewood Fire Department hosted a Fallen Firefighter Memorial on Sunday.

The event took place in front of the Lakewood Fire Station No. 1 and kicked off the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week.

During the ceremony the department honored Terrence W. Scavone, who passed away as an active member of the department. Scavone served the City of Lakewood for the past 30 years.

"He was the first one up and the last one to bed," Lakewood Fire Chief Scott Gilman said.

Gilman praised Scavone's work ethic and his ability to lead.

"He worked every day, he was here from the start of his shift...and he would be the last one to call it quits for the day. His work influence inspired everybody," Gilman said.

Scavone's family was presented with his badge and the flag from Fire Station 3, which was flying the day he passed away.

"I know he's looking down just smiling ear to ear cause he would have been so happy for this," daughter Jennifer Scavone said.

The event not only honored fallen firefighters but also included the oath of office to two new members and one promoted officer.
