Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority approved a $1 million Ohio Healthy Lake Erie Fund grant Thursday for capital improvements to a disposal facility.

The Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) 12 provides an alternative to open lake dumping of Cuyahoga River dredge sediment. It was designed to store harmful sediment and keep it out of Lake Erie's open waters. Some of the sediment processed at the facility is harvested for useful, non-harmful materials that can be put to use in construction products, according to port authority.

Port President Will Friedman said the port authority appreciates the support of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which administers the grant.

"Our work on CDF 12 will keep Cleveland Harbor open for business and Lake Erie safe from contamination," Friedman said.
