Burned out lights plague Cleveland highways

Robert Carillio said the lights that are not working on Route 2 passing through downtown and along the main avenue bridge create a safety hazard for drivers. Carillio often drives at night for work.

“It just makes it dangerous,” he said. “It makes it difficult to see at night, especially when it rains on that bridge.”

Carillio reached out to News 5 after his complaints went unanswered.

There’s also several bulbs out on the Detroit-Superior bridge and it’s pitch black on Route 2 underneath East 9th Street.

“How long does it take to go out there and get a few lights on?” Carillio asked.

Fed up, he started sending emails and making phone calls to the Mayor’s action line and Cleveland Public Power.  He forwarded emails from last month to News 5 after he said CPP failed to do anything about it.

“It’s usually the standard answer. We’re working on that,” he said.

A CPP spokeswoman told News 5 on Wednesday “this issue will be addressed,” that they were working to verify the information and that safety was their top priority.

Carillio isn’t holding his breath.

"When tough times are tough, it doesn’t mean we have to look the part and lighting and keeping the streets swept — that’s just the very minimum thing that we should be able to do," he said.
