Derrick Platzar was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday for his involvement in a hit-skip incident that left the victim with severe injuries.

Platzar, 29, faced charges for aggravated vehicular assault and tampering with evidence.

On the evening of Oct. 3, 2013, 58-year-old Mindy Manyo was riding her bike along Fairmount Boulevard when, according to a Cleveland Heights Police incident report, witnesses heard screeching tires and a loud crash.

Witnesses said a car hit Manyo near the intersection with Lee Road and kept going.

Plaztar was sentenced in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. His attorney blamed drugs and alcohol for the hit-skip. Counsel said Platzar was in a 'dark palce.' Judge Joan Syndenberg countered, stating Platzar was in a program to help him with his issues at the time and 'that in itself is deplorable.'

Platzar was found guilty on three counts and given a two-year prison sentence.
