Judge Jazmin Torres-Lugo has proven, even in 2017, there are still many firsts.
"The first Latina judge in Cleveland,” she said.
The Puerto Rican-born judge was elected last week. She has spent the last 29 years in Cleveland.
"I know about difficulties, you see, because when I came here, and did not know English, I had people that had the go back to your country attitude," said Judge Torres-Lugo.
She said she taught herself how to speak English and was already an attorney before moving to Ohio.
"I needed to work 300 times harder to be where I am now,” said Judge Torres-Lugo.
She said she will be sworn in next month.
