Half of the state's wrong way crashes are local

There have been eight wrong way crashes across the state of Ohio so far this year and half of those crashes have happened in Northeast Ohio.

After each crash, Ohio Department of Transportation spokesperson Amanda McFarland said, ODOT works with police to find out exactly what happened.

A year ago, ODOT added extra signage in many locations. "You'll see double signs, do not enter, wrong way, pavement arrows," said McFarland. All in an attempt to make sure drivers know they are heading the wrong way.

The latest wrong way crash happened Saturday evening on the Shoreway in Cleveland. Police believe alcohol played a role in this latest crash.

Statistics show, so far this year, there have been 35 deadly alcohol related crashes across the state. "We are starting to see these on the rise," McFarland said.

That's why ODOT chose this weekend to put up "buzz driving is drunk driving," on highway signs around the state. "We put them up as a conversation starter," added McFarland.
