The ceremony kicked off the beginning of the week-long National Fire Prevention Week, which began Sunday.

The city's fire department, council and Mayor Mike Summers gathered with the fire apparatus at the site of the Firefighter's Memorial in front of Fire Station No. 1, located at 14601 Madison Ave.

An open house and tour of the fire station and museum followed the ceremony.

Organizers said the city has observed National Fire Prevention Week since 1925.

As part of its efforts to educate the public about safety, the Fire Prevention Bureau will visit local elementary schools to speak about safety and demonstrate firefighters' equipment.
