A 48-year-old man is facing aggravated murder charges after allegedly trying to commit suicide by driving the wrong way on Interstate 480 on Feb. 14.

Police said Mark Rafter of Brooklyn was in a Ford F-150 when his vehicle collided with a Ford Fiesta, killing 20-year-old Kayla Coates who was driving the smaller car.

An investigation into the accident revealed that the crash was a deliberate act by Rafter in an apparent suicide attempt.

Authorities presented their findings to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office on March 9 and Rafter was indicted on charges of aggravated murder and murder. He was also charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and felonious assault.
