SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — This summer could be the start of a seismic shift in how some schools in Northeast Ohio tackle race, equity and inclusion.

A pair of districts are stepping up efforts to ensure conversations about social injustice can lead to lasting changes in the classroom.

Kim Harris has two children currently in Shaker Heights schools. She described the hiring on the district's first director of diversity as a big deal.

“I’m happy to see it now. It’s way, way, way overdue. I’m proud that Shaker is taking the step," said Harris.

For years, Harris said the issues with race, equity and inclusion were clear every time she talked to her son about the high school cafeteria.

“All of the white kids would eat on one side, all the black kids would eat on the other. What more do you need to really see that help was needed," said Harris.

Now stepping in to provide that help is Dr. JeffriAnne Wilder.

“I’ve been doing this work for a really long time," said Wilder.

Wilder was just named Shaker School District's first executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“The expectations are extremely high, but I’m ready for the challenge," said Wilder.

The district said Wilder’s work will be crucial in its efforts to disrupt societal and historical inequities and eliminate disparities among students so that they can all thrive.

“Educational equity really is at the core of the work that they’re doing. Equity, diversity, inclusion — all those things are really valuable and stand at the cornerstone of what we do and how we get along together," said Wilder.

Harris had a bit of advice for Wilder - connect with the community right out of the gate.

“Having the expert is great. Having her lead the way is wonderful. But, if she does not take advantage of this village that is here in Shaker then I think we will be spinning our wheels," said Harris.

Tapping into the commitment already in place from parents, students and staff is what Wilder tells me is what she will build upon.

“Really nice to be able to step into a role where the foundation has already been laid," said Wilder.

For Harris, she wants to see every district follow Shaker's lead.

“It needs to be just as common as having pencils and supplies in a school we have to have the tools we need to get the job done," said Harris.

Similar work is happening on the Cleveland's west side.

Leaders in the Fairview Park School District tell News 5 that they are looking at their strategic plan to see where they can improve anti-racism and equity efforts already underway.

A district policy on Equity and Social Justice is also in the works.

We're told the curriculum in the district will also be updated.
