Geauga County sheriff's deputies recently came across another example of the heavy toll heroin addiction can take on families.
On Feb. 25, workers at a Family Dollar Store in Chardon reported there was a man sitting unconscious in a running vehicle in the store parking lot. The Geauga Co. Sheriff says an employee saw a toddler sitting in the backseat and used a hammer to break a window to get the child out.
The child, age two, was bright red, soaked in sweat and had a dirty diaper but was found to been unhurt.
Emergency responders determined the man, William R. Kelly of Chardon, had overdosed on heroin and gave him several doses of Narcan until he regained consciousness. They took him to the hospital for treatment.
Kelly is facing a charge of endangering children.
