BCI evidence technicians were back at the Willoughby crime scene on Monday following a weekend murder at a downtown apartment.

A 47-year-old man was found stabbed and dead inside a basement apartment, following an argument with his roommate Saturday, according to Willoughby police.

Lawrence Morgan, 53, from Willoughby has been charged with murder and tampering with evidence in the death of Eric Johnson.

The landlord of the building where the men lived at the 4100 block of Erie Street called police at around 10:20 p.m. on May 21 saying that he thought one of his basement apartment tenants had been stabbed to death.

Officers found Johnson dead inside the apartment with two knife wounds in the front of his upper body. They also learned about a verbal argument between the roommates that turned physical, police said.

Morgan left the apartment after the alleged argument; and officers found him in a nearby restaurant at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

"What we know right now is that the two of them did not get along. They were roommates for five months," said Willoughby Police Lt. Jim Schultz.

Before that Morgan had been homeless before moving into the apartment.

"Eric was a very  nice person," said his friend Vincent Vitalone.

Later, the alleged weapon was found and secured as evidence.

Morgan was given a $500,000 bond.

The Willoughby Police Department has asked that anyone with information about the incident call their detective bureau at (440) 953-4210.
