Wickliffe is joining several other cities in Northeast Ohio banning anyone under 21 from buying tobacco products.
In a city council vote that passed 4-3 on May 29, the city amended the ordinance Chapter 537 to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21 in the city.
Wickliffe joins Akron, Euclid and Cleveland, which have adopted the Tobacco 21 ordinance in the last several years.
Five states—California, New Jersey, Oregon, Hawaii and Maine— have raised the age to 21, and at least 320 localities have placed higher age restrictions on the sale of tobacco products.
The ordinance will go into effect on June 28.
