WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio — The Willoughby Hills Fire Department rescued two kayakers on Saturday.

A 47-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were kayaking in the west branch of the Chagrin River on Rogers Road around 4 p.m.

The duo were headed towards Daniels Park in Willoughby by State Route 84, when they capsized their kayaks in the area of Milann Drive in Willoughby Hills.

The man was able to swim and make it to the east bank of the river to find an occupied home to call 911, according to a press release from the fire chief.

The woman was stuck at the base of a 100 feet steep riverbank cliff against the west bank of the river.

Multiple crews across Lake County came to assist in the rescue of the woman.

Both kayakers had life jackets, but the woman fell out of her life jacket when her kayak capsized, according to the fire chief. The man's life jacket was inside the jacket.

The duo were both wearing regular clothes and didn't have anything to protect them from the cold, according to the fire chief.

The man was evaluated and released.

The woman was transported to Hillcrest Hospital for evaluation due to prolonged exposure to the cold.
