AVON LAKE, Ohio — Greenbox has been a part of Avon Lake for more than 50 years.
“Greenbox has been around my entire life, so I grew up actually going to the Greenbox in Avon Lake, making crafts,” said Kimberly Sweigert, an Avon Lake resident.
Greenbox is a free, supervised summer craft program. It’s back this year, but with some changes.
“We thought this could be a perfect opportunity to develop this new way to distribute our craft program,” said Tim Pinchek, the director of Parks and Recreation for Avon Lake. “At one time we did discuss cancelling it, but we modified it, we changed it, we made it work for COVID-19.”
Typically, supervisors sit with kids and assemble the crafts together. This summer, it’s just grab and go.
“It’s a little different. It’s kind of sad because I love helping the kids and showing them what to do and stuff,” said Elena Dusek, a supervisor for Greenbox. “But at least they still get to do the crafts.”
Here’s how it works: the Greenbox is at various parks throughout Avon Lake, you walk up to the box, and grab the craft in it. The supervisors will still be there for questions or guidance. The crafts are first come, first served.
Craft packs will include instructions, supplies, and a list of any additional supplies needed.
Sweigert, who brought her kids to the Greenbox, said she was happy to hear the city was still hosting it.
“We are still kind of hesitant about using the playgrounds at this time, but the Greenbox is completely safe. It gets them out in the park, they can go with their friends, ride their bikes depending on the Greenbox locations,” she said.
