Posted

Most of Lorain County has been hit hard by the heroin epidemic but, in the last 24 hours, Elyria has been hit especially hard.

Elyria experienced six overdoses in 24 hours.

Police believe the overdoses are from heroin, fentanyl and two new synthetic drugs but they won't know for sure until toxicology tests come back.

"You know, I've been a police officer for 26 years and I can tell you this is some of the worst that I've seen over my career in terms of drug addiction and things related to the epidemic," said Capt. Chris Costantino. "The heroin issues are far more reaching than anything I've ever seen."

Police say they're trying to find and arrest the people selling the deadly drugs. So far this year in Elyria there have been 40 overdoses and 12 deaths connected to the heroin crisis.
