Long time Oberlin floral shop reopens after city temporarily put condemned notice on building

Posted

Puffer's Floral Shoppe in Oberlin has been located along Plum Creek for 45 years.

But, recently it's been embroiled in a debate with the city.

The dispute centers around a partially collapsed retaining wall next to the shop.

That’s when city officials posted a condemned sign on the shop, which in return shut it down right before Mother's Day.

Puffer’s owner, Sybil Swanson, said the city told her the collapsed wall compromised the safety of her building.

Swanson said the city told her she had to fix the wall because it’s on her property.

But what she doesn't understand is why the city fixed a retaining wall on private property right across the street.

"It’s not fair for them to not fix our wall, if they fixed the other ones,” Swanson said.

The condemned notification went up a week before Mother’s Day and Oberlin Prom, her busiest week of the year.

Swanson said it cost her thousands of dollars in business.

Recently, the city removed the condemned label, saying the building was not compromised after all.

While the shop has re opened, a legal fight could also occur over who pays to repair the retaining wall.

“We think Oberlin is a super town. We want the city to be fair,” Swanson said.

On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the city's law director responded in an email saying in December the city notified Puffers' owners they needed to fix and maintain the retaining wall.
