The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department's Director of Regional Corrections has resigned.

News 5 confirmed the resignation late Wednesday. The move comes during a time of increased scrutiny of the county jail.

After the death of six inmates in the past four months, Cleveland activists and at least one judge have asked for an update in the ongoing security probe at the justice center.

Ken Mills joined the county in 2014 as the county's first Director of Public Safety and Justice Services.

In a statement, Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish said he wishes Mills well.

"We appreciate Mr. Mills’ service to the county, especially his innovative initiatives to provide workforce training for inmates," Budish said.

The county is searching for his replacement immediately.
