Traffic trouble is on the way to one of Akron’s busiest highways.

Starting Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. and extending through Mid-November, crews will close several ramps and reduce travel lanes on I-77/I-76 in Central Akron.

Those ramp closures include the 76 eastbound ramp to 77 westbound, the 77 northbound ramp to 76 westbound and State Route 8 southbound to 76 westbound.

Several other nearby on and off ramps to 76 will also close for varying durations of time, part of a multi-year project to replace aging bridges and eventually widen the interstate.

ODOT District 4 spokesman Brent Kovacs said work done over the next few months is part of the “big picture."

“Imagine the bridge is gone, dirt’s all the way up to the top of the surface, and then repave the surface, so you’re basically removing where the bridges once were and just paving on top of it,” he said.

ODOT is recommending drivers on I-77 north of Akron needing to continue south use I-76 to the I-277 bypass. Drivers taking S.R. 8 south needing to connect to I-76 west can use S.R. 59 or the I-277 bypass.
