Jury: Life without parole in Barberton murders

Posted

A Summit County grand jury has recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole for one of the brothers involved in the murders of three people in Barberton on New Year's Eve in 2013.

Eric Hendon, 33, was facing the death penalty.

Earlier this month, the jury found Hendon guilty of aggravated murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and felonious assault in connection with the deaths of John Kohler, his 18-year-old step-daughter Ashley Carpenter and his 14-year-old son David Carpenter-Kohler.

Barberton police say the Hendon, along with his brother Michael, went to the family's home on Dec. 31, 2013 to rob them of drugs and money.

During the robbery, Kohler and his two children were shot and killed. Kohler's girlfriend was also shot in the head and stabbed in the face. She survived but lost an eye.

Michael Hendon was sentenced last year to life without parole after a judge ruled the he was "intellectually disabled" and could not face the death penalty.
