NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio — There’s a private island for sale in Portage Lakes, and did we mention it’s a steal for a private island?

Known as “Stevenhagen Island,” the 8-acre property in New Franklin includes a 5.5-acre island in Turkeyfoot Lake and it comes with a price tag at $1.3 million, according to a report from News 5 media partner Ohio.com.

It might not have the appeal of a Caribbean Island, but nonetheless, it’s an island, in Ohio.

Laddie Stevenhagen, a member of the family trust who is selling the island, said boaters and people have been drawn to it since its sole land connection was cut off in the 1970s.

Even though the island sits just behind his family home’s yard, the lure is still there. The seclusion the island provides by a large tree keeps people coming back.

Stevenhagen said the land, and house his father built, have been in the family for more than 50 years, long before the city of New Franklin was established.

Howard Hanna real estate agent Jaunae Carter said the property has three bedrooms, 3.5 baths, a recreation room, two garages, a one-room playhouse in the backyard, a barn—the list goes on.

Stevenhagen's older sister Karen Kell hopes the property is bought by someone who appreciates nature and the solace the island offers.

“I hope we get somebody who is tickled to buy it,” she said.
