Fatal crashes involving drivers who recently used marijuana doubled in Washington after voters decided to legalize the drug, according to a new report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Researchers found that the percentage of drivers involved in fatal crashes who recently used marijuana more than doubled from eight to 17 percent between 2013 and 2014.
One in six drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2014 had recently used marijuana, according to the report.
According to AAA, some states have created legal limits that specify the max amount of THC drivers can have in their systems. However, researchers reportedly found that a driver could have a high level of marijuana in their system without necessarily being impaired.
AAA is now asking that states rely on a positive test for pot use and behavioral and physiological evidence of driver impairment.
On Tuesday, the Ohio House passed a proposal to legalize medical marijuana in the state.
