Police said early Tuesday morning a suspect in an active shooter situation at Michigan State University was located off campus and had died from an apparent "self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Officials said three students died and five were critically injured. Four of the five students hospitalized needed surgery, officials said.

According to family members, 19-year-old Arielle Diamond Anderson and 20-year-old Brian Fraser were two of the three victims killed in the mass shooting. Clawson Public Schools said another victim was Alexandria Verner, a junior at MSU.

Campus police declared the campus threat free and lifted a shelter-in-place order enacted Monday night as police searched for the suspect they said was on foot.

Multiple reports of shootings were received Monday night as police urged the public to be careful of misinformation during hours of confusion about the number shooting locations and how many people were injured.

"This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight. But we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students and the surrounding community," said MSU Deputy Chief Chris Rozman.

"We are relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus, while we realize that there is so much healing that will need to take place after this," Rozman said.

"Our hearts are with those who have been affected by this senseless act of violence. Giving an update like this is never easy," he said. "As a father, I can only imagine how parents are feeling right now. This will be the beginning of a long healing process for everyone who has been affected."

Police said when they arrived on the scene, they discovered multiple people who were involved in a shooting. At around 8:30 p.m. ET, police said there were shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. The campus community tweeted a message for students to “Please secure-in-place immediately.”

Police identified the suspect later on Monday evening as a short male wearing a baseball cap. After getting a tip, police were led to the suspect around 11:35 p.m. The suspect, Anthony Mcrae, was located in nearby Lansing, Michigan. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Michigan's Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said on Tuesday that she spoke with President Joe Biden, who promised her federal resources.

Michigan State University police previously said all campus activities were canceled through Wednesday night, "including athletics, classes, and all campus-related activities."
