Potholes a pain in Painesville, progress made

Posted

Some of our viewers have told us potholes put the pain in Painesville. However, the city said it’s making progress on the rim rattlers.

“There’s a lot of neighbors and people in the community that are complaining about it,” said George Vliet who lives on Pearl Street in Painesville. He told us his girlfriend had problems on his street.

“She came home one night and hit a big pothole on the street here and her ball bearings from her rear end fell out,” Vliet said.

Our cameras caught Painesville crews on Pearl today filling potholes and last year when we showed you hundred of potholes on North State Street, well now it’s chewed up and ready for repaving starting tomorrow.  Plus, last year Erie Street saw a resurfacing as well.

“We have some significant other improvements needed on Jackson, on Richmond and those are in the pipeline in the next 3-4 years,” said Painesville City Manager Tony Carson, Jr.

We handed Carson a list of problem spots that includes Storrs that bounced our bowling ball around as we did a roll test on some streets. Liberty Street Extension extended it’s rough road reputation this year as the potholes are filled but the road’s surface is like the top of a super supreme pizza.

Carson explained that they're following a rating system for the roads and after a streets levy passed in 2013, they’ve spent more in the past two years than they had in the previous 5 years. “It’s great. We know we need to do more. We still get the phone calls but they’re not near the phone calls we were receiving 2-3 years ago,” said Carson.  He also told us this year the city is spending another million dollars on the streets.
