Columbus police say officers were fired upon as they responded to a report of shots fired on the northeast side of the central Ohio city. No injuries were reported.

Police report that an unknown person or persons opened fire on the officers with a "high caliber firearm" shortly before midnight Wednesday. The shots were fired at a site where police had just found two apartments and multiple vehicles struck by gunfire.

One officer described the shots on the northeast side of the city as rifle fire in a communication over the police radio.

Police say a SWAT team and a police helicopter were called in to help search the area. The search was called off when no suspect was located.
