Are you looking for a job or maybe a little extra income in the new year? Then scammers are looking for you. Here’s a big-time warning about the top five job scams hitting Ohio as compiled by the Ohio Attorney General.
1. Work-from-home office job where you ship packages or process payments, but you have to pay upfront for software, computers or other supplies.
2. Mystery shopper. The problem is the first assignment is to deposit a fake check then you wire-transfer a portion of your funds to someone else.
3. Running a web-based business. Once again an upfront fee is asked for to set up the business, but then nothing happens.
4. Nanny/caregiver scam. The so-called client asks for a check to be deposited and then you send money to a landlord.
5. Wrap your car in an advertisement. You're asked to provide money upfront before the ad can be placed but it's all a scam.
Signs of a scam: interviews conducted only online or through instant messenger, recruiters claiming to work for a big company but have a third-party email account, and the age-old adage--if it seems too good to be true, it's probably not.
