ODOT to start funding local government transportation safety projects

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Transportation is making it easier for communities to fund safety improvements.

Before Monday, ODOT required a 10 percent local contribution for safety projects.

Now, the state will cover 100 percent of the project costs. ODOT said they were able to do this because of the recent increase in the state motor vehicle fuel tax.

“In previous years, if communities were not able to match the funding, a project may have unnecessarily been stalled,” Governor Mike DeWine said. “With ODOT now funding 100 percent of safety projects, communities can make needed updates in a timely manner, ensuring the safety of both pedestrians and drivers.”

Safety improvements, such as adding turn lanes, reconstructing rural curves and upgrading signs are eligible for the funding.

The department will consider funding requests up to $10 million.
