President Donald Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will become White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles, who resigned Thursday night, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The announcement marks Trump's first major personnel shake-up since Democrats swept Tuesday's midterm elections.
Miller, who was serving as White House deputy chief of staff, will assume the role Monday, Nov. 9. Wiles will move to Trump's political operation.
"President Trump is the most transformative political leader in American History — and he has single-handedly saved America from those who would destroy it," Miller wrote in a social media post on Friday. "It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have served on his team from Day One, and I am honored beyond words to serve as his White House Chief of Staff."
Trump addressed the personnel change outside of the White House on Friday.
"I wanted to make a change. I think Susie's done a great job but I just wanted to — Stephen's been great, and we got to make, we got to make moves. Sometimes, sometimes in life, you have to make moves."
Trump had said in October there was "no chance" he would replace Wiles in her role.
Wiles also thanked Trump in a post on X, saying serving the president was an "honor of a lifetime."
"I’m so proud to have been a part of what we’ve accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First," she wrote.
Miller, meanwhile, has been a central figure in shaping Trump's immigration agenda and has emerged as one of the administration's most influential voices on immigration enforcement and other domestic policy issues.
"The mission now is more clear than ever: Fight with all of our soul to support our President and defend this magnificent Republic," Miller said about his plans in the new role.
The leadership change comes just three days after Democrats won control of both the House and Senate, delivering a major political setback to Trump and Republicans.
"Days after Americans delivered a historic rebuke of Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Republicans in the midterm elections, Trump is elevating the architect of his failed agenda, Stephen Miller, to serve as his top advisor," DNC chair Ken Martin wrote in a statement on Friday. "Miller is the mastermind behind Trump and Vance’s cruel, corrupt, and costly agenda, and the reason that Americans have been shot and killed on the street with impunity. On Tuesday, Americans made it clear that they are fed up with Republicans’ failure to deliver on their promises, yet Trump and Vance are doubling down by backing Miller."
