New emojis coming to iPhones

If you’ve been patiently waiting for new emojis, boy do we have some great news for you!

After announcing their pending arrival earlier this year, the new emoji Unicode will be here very soon. Hundreds of new emojis, including more smiley faces, gender-neutral characters, clothing, food, animals and mythical creatures are coming to iPhone and iPad with iOS 11.1.

The update will be available the week of Oct. 8 as part of Apple’s public beta, which you can sign up for here to get early access to the new characters. If you don’t want to sign up for the beta, you’ll probably only need to wait a few weeks for the software update to arrive on your device.

So, what all will we see? More faces, of course, including star-struck, a literal head exploding face and an emoji that raises one eyebrow. Mark Davis, the president of Unicode, even tweeted his opinion on what the raised eyebrow emoji represented:

Just in time for Halloween, you’ll also get mythical beings—like genieszombiesmermaidselves and fairies.

Also included are gender-neutral characters, more skin tones and more specific emojis, like a woman with a headscarf, a bearded person, breastfeeding, and, my personal favorite, a person in the yoga position ‘lotus’.

New food items include

  • a sandwich,
  • coconut
  • a cut of meat
  • broccoli

The new update also includes the Love-You Gesture, designed after the “I love you” hand sign in American Sign Language.

Using emojis correctly

While we wait for the latest update, we wonder how long it will take for all of us to realize we’re using the new emojis incorrectly. After all, it’s happened before with the current emojis. Check out 17 ways people mistakenly use their favorite emojis.
