Cleveland Indians to honor Frank Robinson, the first African-American manager in MLB at Home Opener

CLEVELAND — It's less than a month away until fans pack Progressive Field for the sold out 2019 Indians Home Opener, and the Tribe has announced the details about the opening ceremony.

The Cleveland Indians announced the details of the Home Opener ceremony Tuesday morning.

The game takes place on April 1 at Progressive Field and will mark the team's 26th Home Opener at the ballpark. The team will pay tribute to Hall of Famer and player-manager Frank Robinson, who became the first African-American manager in MLB history on Opening Day in 1975. Robinson went on to hit a solo home run in his first at-bat as a player-manager at Municipal Stadium.

Players will have No. 20 patches on their uniforms to honor Robinson's milestones.

The Indians will honor the ballparks 25th anniversary with alum Wayne Kirby, who will throw the ceremonial first pitch to Indians Hall of Famer Sandy Alomar.

A pregame ceremony will celebrate the team's title as 2018 American League Central Division Champions, during which the AL Central Division Pennant will be unveiled for the third-straight year.

Retired Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Generald Wilson will perform the National Anthem. Members of the United States Marine Corp, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force will present the colors.

Gates open at 2 p.m. and the first pitch is at 4:10 p.m.
