The Cleveland Indians are bringing back a familiar face. The club announced Monday they've acquired Joe Smith from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Smith, a right hand pitcher, will be coming to the Indians in exchange for left hand pitcher Thomas Pannone and infielder Samad Taylor.
Smith, 33, is returning to the Indians after spending five seasons with the club from 2009-13, with a combined earned run average of 2.76 in 303 relief outings with the Indians.
Since debuting with the New York Mets in 2007, Smith owns a career Major League record of 44-28 with 29 saves and a 2.95 ERA in 677 relief appearances. He is seventh among active Major League pitchers in appearances.
The Dayton native posted a mark of 3-0 with a 3.28 ERA in 38 relief appearances with the Blue Jays this year. He signed a one-year contract as a free agent in February.
