Tuesday night made it 20 wins in a row as the Indians continued their historic winning streak.
There was little doubt Tuesday that the team would make it happen though. The Indians now sit behind only three other teams for longest winning streaks in MLB history.
“It’s just great to watch them play and they’re having fun and it’s really cool,” said a fan walking into Tuesday’s game.
“They’re taking a big command in these leads, so it’s very exciting,” said another.
Average attendance this season at Progressive Field is up 5,000 fans from last year.
“The atmosphere is absolutely incredible. I was here last night for 19 and to see Kluse pitching for 20, I have no doubt in my mind we’re going to get the record in a couple days here,” said a Kent State student heading into the game.
The Indians took a devastating 2016 World Series and turned it into motivation to make history.
“So this is extremely difficult to put a winning streak like this because with baseball, you got to be good and you got to have a little bit of luck on your side,” said News 5 Sports Anchor, Hakem Dermish.
Dermish says a streak like this starts with a winning mindset at the top.
“It all starts with Terry Francona. The culture in the clubhouse, he’s the one behind that. Before their 20th win it’s been nothing but dominance. The Indians had defeated their opponents by a combined score of 132 to 32. They’ve trailed for only four of 171 innings played and they’ve hit 38 home runs during the streak while only allowing 32 total runs.
All a recipe, some say, for another chance this year to do what they couldn’t last year.
“This team will get back to the World Series and do what the Kansas City Royals did. The Royals lost in seven games in the World Series, came back the next year and won it. I think the same recipe is going to happen for the Cleveland Indians,” said Dermish.
