The Montreal Alouettes have released quarterback Johnny Manziel from their team, according to a Canadian Football League news release.

Montreal released him after it was found he contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league.

The CFL said Manziel is not eligible to sign with another team in the league, which had his full rights for two seasons.

“We are disappointed by this turn of events. Johnny was provided a great deal of support by our organization, in collaboration with the CFL, but he has been unable to abide by the terms of his agreement,” said General Manager Kavis Reed in a statement. “We worked with the league and presented alternatives to Johnny, who was unwilling to proceed.”

Manziel started eight games for Montreal, passing 1,290 yards on 106 of 165 passing. He finished the season with five touchdowns.

He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014 before getting released in 2016.
