What's most notable about this El Nino Winter in Northern Ohio is what we are NOT seeing. Snow...
OK, yes, we have had snow this Winter, but lets consider the facts. As we end the month of February, the seasonal snowfall for Cleveland Hopkins Airport so far is 22 inches. That's it! Consider the fact that by this time in an average Cleveland Winter, we should have shoveled 52 inches of the white stuff. We are a whopping 30 inches below average as we head into March.
Its not that we didn't expect this. My prediction for Cleveland Snowfall this winter was issued back in October. During STRONG El Nino Winters like the one we are currently experiencing, Greater Cleveland sees about half of the average seasonal snow of 68 inches. I surmised we would measure between 30 & 40 inches of snow by Winter's end. Right now, we are still two or three good Alberta Clippers away from that prediction! We may get there...
As of now, 22 inches of snow at Hopkins ranks #3 All Time for Least Snowy Cleveland Winters. This number falls behind only #2, 1931-32 with 21.5" of snow & #1, the Winter of 1918-19 with 8.8" of snow.
Akron/Canton Regional Airport is about the same for snowfall. So far, 21.7 inches of snow has been measured at the airport. that's about 14 inches below the normal amount by March 1st of 36 inches.
