An ATM was taken in a smash and grab just after 4 a.m. on Cleveland's east side Wednesday morning.

According to police, the American Food Mart, located at the corner of Woodland Avenue and Woodhill Road, was open when three or four men rammed into the store with a stolen minivan.

The suspects then jumped out of the minivan armed with guns and loaded the ATM into a second minivan as the store clerk took cover inside a cooler.

Cleveland police officers spotted the van leaving the area and attempted to stop the suspects but they took off at a high rate of speed. Officers said due to the strict pursuit policy of the Cleveland Police Department they were not allowed to pursue the minivan. The policy restricts police from pursuing vehicles and suspects involved in property crimes.

The store was left with a giant hole in the front with food and other good scattered throughout the parking lot.

The van used to smash into the store was left running in the parking lot with significant damage.
