CLEVELAND — Workers with Service Employers International Union District 1199 will join thousands of works in more than 25 cities across the country in actions to support the “Strike for Black Lives”— a national day of action demanding that corporations and governments take action to confront systemic racism.
The strike will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the SEIU District headquarters at Shaker Square. Watch it live in the media player below:
SEIU District is a union that represents those working in essential care services like hospitals, nursing homes, library workers, parole officers and educators in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and across the country.
Strikers are demanding sweeping action by corporations and government to confront systemic racism and economic inequality that limits mobility and career advancement for many Black and Latino workers, who make up a disproportionate number of those earning less than a living wage.
Where work stoppages are not possible for a full day, participants will either picket during a lunch break or observe moments of silence to honor Black lives lost to police violence, organizers said.
