A street scam is making the rounds in Mentor on the Lake. Police say men are asking for money for painting house numbers on the curb, a service residents never ordered.

"This week they are going around to houses that didn't leave any money and telling them they want money for what they did," Chief Gielink said.

Police Chief John Gielink told News 5 the painters are not permitted and do not work with the city of Mentor on the Lake.

According to people who dealt with the painters, they weren't asking for a set amount of money, they were just asking for money.

Chief Gielink said, it's important to know, you do not have to pay.

"We are here to make sure people know they have no obligation to pay for this," he said.

He added that it wouldn't be a problem if the painters did a job they were asked to do, or if they went door to door with a permit, but they didn't.
