Akron Police detectives are investigating after a 13-year-old girl was found dead in Minordy Place, an alley near the 400 block of S. Arlington Street, Monday afternoon.

An Akron resident called the police just before 1 p.m. after finding the teen's body.

Authorities said there are no apparent signs of trauma on the girl. They described the circumstances as a "sudden death."

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the teen. She was a student at East Middle School. Out of respect to the family, we are not naming her at this time.

Akron Public Schools Superintendent Mary Outley sent News 5 the following statement:

"On behalf of the Akron Public Schools family, I extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved this child.

The loss of a young life is always devasting, profound...an indescribable tragedy. We are united in grief as we come to terms with what really is unimaginable.

Even though school is not in session, we know this heartbreaking event will undoubtedly impact our students and staff members, who may be experiencing a range of emotions. We have implemented a comprehensive support plan to ensure that all members of our school community receive the necessary assistance and resources available."

According to an Akron police report, the girl's father reported the teen missing on Sunday morning. He said the family has had issues lately, causing her to run away.

An autopsy was completed Tuesday, and the cause and manner of death are still pending. The autopsy confirmed there were no signs of apparent trauma. Further testing will be performed.

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said the city is mourning the girl's death and called the situation a tragedy.

"There are no words which could adequately express the depth of such a loss in our community. My sincere condolences go out to the friends and family as they grieve their loved one at this time, and I pray for healing for our city," Horrigan said.

Akron Presumptive Mayor Elect Shammas Malik issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the girl's death:

“I’m deeply saddened to hear about this tragic loss of life. I’ve spoken with Councilwoman Mosley about this issue and look forward to continuing to work with her, Mayor Horrigan, and others. Public safety remains my number one priority and will be our administration’s primary focus come January.”
