AKRON, Ohio — A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured late Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was in crashed on Interstate 76 in Akron.
According to the Akron Police Department, the Jeep had just entered the highway from the South Arlington Street entrance ramp when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it hit a guardrail. The 16-year-old, who was sitting in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. The Jeep then traveled across several lanes and collided with the median before finally coming to a stop.
The teen was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The Jeep's 16-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger, who were both wearing seat belts, were not injured, police said.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash but said speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the incident.
