A 72-year-old Akron man was left in critical condition after a bike crash, but how the accident happened is a mystery.

The accident happened in downtown Akron Sept. 10.

Richard Harrod’s family says he pedals up to 40 miles on weekends. He spent last Sunday bicycling the Towpath Trail. A passerby found Harrod on the ground at Mill and High streets.

His family doesn’t know if his serious injuries were caused by crashing his bike, or if he was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

"Every doctor and nurse we talked to has been saying there is no way this could have happened from just a fall, they all think he was hit by a car, because of the extensive injuries," said Harrod's son, Brian. "We're hoping that someone saw something or knows something and will call police."

Harrod suffered numerous injuries including broken ribs, a broken clavicle, broken hip, a brain bleed, and a lacerated liver.

His family hopes someone saw how the accident happened and will call police.
