Akron police looking for suspect identified in Monday afternoon homicide

AKRON, Ohio — A warrant has been issued for the arrest of man authorities identified as a suspect connected to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Monday afternoon.

Eugene Calvin Wells Jr., 24, of Akron, has been charged with aggravated murder, according to Akron police. Wells is about 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs around 170 pounds.

Authorities said Wells and Walter Matthews were involved in a fight outside a convenience store near Princeton Street and West South Street, and shots were fired. Following the shooting, police said Wells drove off in a black Chevrolet Impala.

Police found Matthews lying in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
