AKRON, Ohio — The Akron RubberDucks paid tribute to an Ohio favorite in their "Shawshank Redemption" night Saturday.
The team announced they were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the film. They were dressed for the occasion and had the bobbleheads to match.
The RuberDucks took the field donning “inmate” uniforms. Bob Gunton, the actor who played Warden Norton in the film, made an appearance, throwing out the first pitch at the game.
The first 1,000 fans were presented with Warden Norton bobbleheads and following the game, the RubberDucks set off “Jailhouse Rock” fireworks.
As many Ohioans know, the primary filming location for the blockbuster film was in Mansfield. Many of the movie’s jail scenes were filmed in Ohio State Reformatory, and most of the other scenes took place in Mansfield as well.
“The Shawshank Redemption,” which premiered in 1994, was based on the 1982 Stephen King short story with the same name.
The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, making it no surprise Northeast Ohio is so proud to celebrate the classic movie.
