A Canton police officer had to use the opiate-reversal drug naloxone after coming into contact with an unknown white powder while struggling with a suspect Wednesday night.
Police said the incident happened around 7 p.m. when they responded to a domestic violence call on the 1320 block of 22nd Street North East.
When officers arrived they discovered the suspect had left the area, but police were able to locate the man nearby on the 800 block of Lawrence Road North East.
Authorities said when they approached the suspect's vehicle they noticed a white powder substance, which they believed to be some type of drug, all over the man's clothing.
When the man refused to exit his car, a struggle ensued, and one of the officers came into contact with the powder.
Police said the officer immediately started feeling the effects of the substance, and with the help of his partner, administered a dose of naloxone to himself.
The officer was transported to Mercy Medical Center and was later listed in good condition.
The Stark County Hazmat Team also responded to the scene.
The suspect was also taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment and then later to Stark County Jail where he was charged with domestic violence.
Additional charges are pending, police said.
