Man arrested for allegedly beating 85-year-old in Canton

CANTON, Ohio — The U.S. Marshals Service has arrested a man wanted for the beating and hit-skip crash that left an 85-year-old man hospitalized with multiple facial injuries.

Travonce Backie, 32, was wanted on charges of attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and felonious assault, a second-degree felony, according to Canton police.

Authorities said they believe Backie and the victim were involved in a crash on 8th Street NE Saturday night.

The 85-year-old said he was struck by a car that pulled out of a parking lot and into his path. It was then the driver, now believed to be Backie, approached him and began beating him while he was in his car.

Backie was arrested in the 3200 block of 5th Street SW in Canton Tuesday.
