Bicyclist dies after vehicle goes off the road and onto the sidewalk in Akron

AKRON, Ohio — A bicyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle near the intersection of East Exchange Street and South Broadway in Akron early Tuesday morning, according to a release from the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., a man, who has not yet been identified, was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk near the intersection of East Exchange and South Broadway street, when a vehicle heading northbound on S. Broadway went off the roadway and up onto the sidewalk, hitting the cyclist.

According to police, the 50-year-old driver continued moving and struck a parked car in a parking lot at a nearby bank.

The victim was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where he died from his injuries at around 3:41 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment.

Police said the driver has not been arrested and the investigation is pending. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Authorities are looking for help in identifying the driver.
