Fake police convince elderly to withdraw money

Posted

The Akron Police Department received two separate incidents where subjects called elderly individuals and posed as members of the police department.

Police said the callers told the victims they were investigating fraud occurring at their bank and asked them to assist in a 'covert' operation to catch the thieves.

According to police, the suspect told one of the victims to withdraw large sums of money from their personal banking account. One victim drove the suspects to the bank to get the money. The other met the victim at her home after she had already taken the money out of her bank account.

Akron Police want to remind all that they will never request a citizen withdraw personal funds from a bank account. If you receive such a call, contact police or your local law agency. Information about the caller's number, type of voice, etc., will help police in their investigation.
