CANTON, Ohio — UPDATE: Shortly after this story was published, the university decided to cancel classes on Wednesday.
Malone University in Canton announced it will not be closing this week.
In a letter sent to students, Provost Nathan Phinney said that since the cold snap is brief, he does not expect that they will have to close the campus due to the temperature.
He also said that they will have a small stash of stocking caps in the Provost's office in Founders Hall available for anyone who needs them. It is unknown how many caps will be available.
Students have started a petition to close the university due to the temperatures.
Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson said temperatures in the Canton area will be below 0 for 24 to 30 hours.
Starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday, wind chills in Canton will be between minus 20 and minus 30 for 24 straight hours.
If the temperatures remains below 0 all day on Wednesday, it will be the first time a daytime high has not gone above 0 since 1994.
