A 30-year-old man was injured in an officer-involved shooting in Akron on Friday night after authorities responded to a home for a person allegedly armed with a handgun and threatening residents.
A resident notified police about the man just before 9 p.m. The caller said the man appeared to be intoxicated and he was banging on the door for someone to come out. The caller said the man seemed upset and he had threatened to shoot through the door, authorities said.
Officers arrived a few minutes later and confronted the armed man. The man was given verbal orders to show his hands and get down on the porch, police said. Shots were fired and the man was struck by gunfire, authorities said.
It's not known what led up to the shooting.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The two officers involved — a 4-and-half-year veteran and another with less than one year of service — were placed on paid administrative leave, per departmental policy.
The shooting is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
