Police investigating after 8-year-old girl killed in Akron shooting Friday night

AKRON, Ohio — An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed Friday night in Akron, according to police.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Roselle Avenue around 11:48 p.m. after receiving several reports of shots fired.

Once on scene, officers found 8-year-old Mikayla Pickett with an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

Mikayla was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital where she later died from her injuries, according to police.

Officers learned that there was a large gathering of teenagers at the home before shots were fired.

Akron police said the unknown suspect or suspects were outside the home and fired multiple shots.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is in the very early stages, police said.
