A high-ranking Akron officer is relieved of duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Captain Brian Simcox was placed on paid administrative leave on Tuesday night as an internal investigation continues, Lieutenant Rick Edwards told News 5's Bob Jones.
Simcox has more than 20 years of service on the force.
Sources told News 5 Simcox was escorted out of the police building around 8 p.m.
This comes as Chief James Nice was asked by the mayor to resign last month.
Simcox's removal is not part of the probe into the former chief's unethical and potentially criminal behavior.
There are no further details on why the officer was placed on leave.
