A Cleveland police officer indicted for having a relationship with a teenager was handed a suspended jail sentence Monday.

Elvin Sanchez, 36, was working as a part-time security officer at West Park Academy when he began a relationship with a 14-year-old student.

According to the prosecutor's office, Sanchez and the student exchanged sexual text messages. He was also accused of touching the girl inappropriately.

Monday, Sanchez plead guilty to three counts of sexual imposition, one count of attempted importuning, and one count of possessing criminal tools.

He was sentenced to two years of community control sanctions and given a suspended sentence of 12 months in Cuyahoga County Jail, which he will serve if he violates the terms of his probation or commits another crime.

Sanchez will be required to register as a Tier I Sex Offender for the next 15 years.

He resigned from the Cleveland Division of Police Monday.

He was suspended without pay beginning in October, when the charges were filed.
